As with most areas throughout the State, the Town of Naches has seen an influx of electric-assisted bicycle and scooter use on Town streets and sidewalks. It is our desire to find a balance between enjoying the outdoors and legal requirements for these vehicles.

As of June 11, 2026, Washington state legislation (ESSB 6110) became effective which better defines an e-bike as having fully operable pedals, a motor rated at 750 watts or less, and must meet one of three e-bike classifications in Washington State (see RCW 46.06.169). If a vehicle does not meet the legal definition of an e-bike, it may not be regulated under other Washington laws that apply to motorcycles, moped, and other motorized vehicles.
Anyone (including juveniles) using a e-bike should be aware that electric motorcycles operated on public roads may be subject to state requirements such as licensing, registration, insurance, helmet use, and other traffic laws. Parents can also be held responsible if they allow an unlicensed juvenile to operate a motor vehicle in violation of state law. These laws are in place to help protect everyone who uses town roads, trails, and sidewalks, including riders, drivers, and pedestrians. Please take a few minutes to review the WSDOT Flyer to ensure the vehicle is being operated both legally and safely.
For more information, see WSDOT Bicyclist laws and safety.
Naches Municipal Code 9.16 Bicycles and Other Recreational Wheels addresses the rules and regulations for use of bicycles throughout the Town of Naches. Specifically, 9.16.030 details prohibited uses and locations including areas of Naches Ave and/or Second Street, and all of the Naches Depot property and/or Highway 12.
If you experience issues with e-bikes in the Town of Naches, please contact the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office.
